Earthworks is a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, DC, with 32 employees across 10 states. Earthworks is seeking a motivated campaigner to coordinate our “Making Clean Energy Clean, Just & Equitable” initiative which aims to ensure that the transition to renewable energy sources is powered by responsibly and equitably sourced minerals that minimizes the need for new extraction and moves the mining industry towards more responsible practices. We support transition to a 100% renewable energy future while seeking to ensure that people and the environment are not put at risk through destructive mining for the components of batteries, solar panels and wind turbines.

We are looking for candidates with strong research, writing, and spoken communications skills; experience and skills in corporate engagement and advocacy; a background and interest in the renewables transition; and working directly with frontline communities affected by extraction. The position requires interaction with a wide range of individuals and organizations, and effective interpersonal and diplomacy skills are essential to the job. Fluency in Spanish, French or Bahasa Indonesia required.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build and maintain working relationships with external allies – grassroots defenders, community organizations, NGOs, labor unions, renewables sector, and others·
  • Coordinate regular coalition-building activities including virtual and in-person meetings and listserve discussions with allies
  • Engage with renewable energy, automotive and other industry leaders and innovators;
  • Identify and actively pursue outreach to new stakeholders from civil society, business, R&D sectors, and others
  • Develop and implement campaign strategies and advocacy tools to move the renewables sector to more responsible minerals sourcing, including enlisting corporate commitments
  • Stay up-to-date on trends, research and industry developments related to mining and renewable energy, and communicate this analysis in the form of blogs, social media posts, campaign updates, and short reports
  • Keep track of major EV and battery industry events and points of intervention for amplifying community and campaign messages, securing speaker spots, and engagement with companies
  • Maintain and develop relationships with grassroots groups and NGOs in regions where lithium, nickel, cobalt and other battery minerals are extracted or in exploration
  • Provide support to grassroots campaigns through research, technical assistance, developing media materials, and organizing discussions and meetings
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of research reports, online action alerts, donor materials, newsletters, website updates, fact sheets and social media content
  • Prepare regular written and verbal communications to keep team members and allies updated, for media materials and websites, and donor materials and fundraising;
  • Keep up-to-date and complete program files
  • Share organizational responsibilities to maintain a healthy and equitable workplace
  • Check-in weekly with the Mining Program Director and program team

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years of experience in environmental or human rights advocacy, organizing, and research
  • Knowledge and experience working on mining and/or renewable energy issues
  • Strong diplomacy and effective interpersonal skills
  • Strong verbal presentation skills
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Experience with corporate campaigning, research and/or engagement
  • Well-organized and detail-oriented
  • Decision-making skills and ability to manage time and priorities effectively
  • A flexible and positive attitude, and willingness to be a team player
  • Commitment to environmental, human rights, and social justice issues
  • Spanish, French or Bahasa Indonesia language fluency
  • Candidates with international backgrounds are encouraged to apply

The salary for this position is competitive for the small to medium non-profits, ranging from $54-65K depending on experience.  Benefits include full health and dental coverage for the employee and their partner/family (plus an employer funded HSA), paid vacation, and a retirement plan with an employer match, after one year. Additionally, after 7 years, staff are eligible for a 3 month, fully paid sabbatical.
